Hwaseong-Gwacheon expressway construction gets green light

A significant infrastructure project, the Hwaseong-Gwacheon Expressway Private Investment Project, has cleared a major hurdle by passing its suitability review by the Korea Development Institute (KDI). This 31.1 km expressway, with an estimated cost of 1.8 trillion won, is poised to become a vital artery connecting southwestern Gyeonggi Province to Seoul, promising to reshape the region's transportation landscape.

The Hwaseong-Gwacheon Expressway Private Investment Project, a 31.1 km road connecting Hwaseong and Gwacheon, has passed its suitability review by the Korea Development Institute (KDI).

The project's primary objective is to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion plaguing existing major roads like National Road 309 and National Road 47. The Gyeonggi Provincial Government projects substantial reductions in daily traffic volume on these routes, estimating a decrease of approximately 22,000 vehicles on National Road 309 and tens of thousands more on the Gunpo and Gwacheon sections of National Road 47. Furthermore, the expressway is expected to slash travel times from Hwaseong's Bongdam to downtown Seoul by an estimated 32 to 53 minutes.

This initiative is particularly timely, as it is designed to proactively address the surge in traffic demand anticipated from the development of the "3rd New Cities" in the region. The project was initially proposed by a consortium led by Hyosung Heavy Industries in November 2024 and subsequently submitted to KDI for review in December of the same year. With KDI's approval, the project will now move forward through subsequent stages, including environmental impact assessments and public bidding.
