Teachers' unions in Switzerland are sounding the alarm over overheating classrooms, urging immediate action to renovate school buildings. Unions representing teachers in the French-speaking region and nationally are calling for a swift assessment of school infrastructure to prioritize necessary repairs and upgrades.

David Rey, president of the French-speaking Teachers' Union (SER), used a press conference to illustrate the stark contrast between comfortable meeting rooms and the likely conditions students will face. "I hope you appreciate this pleasant, air-conditioned setting – the reality will be very different in many classrooms starting next Monday," he stated, highlighting the urgency of the issue.

This concern over building conditions is one of two main issues the unions are focusing on this year. The second major concern stems from a large-scale survey on inclusive education conducted among over 10,000 German-speaking teachers. The survey, carried out by the gfs.berne institute, aims to identify resource gaps and challenges in implementing inclusive educational practices.

Rey recalled the exceptional measures some cantons took before the summer holidays, such as temporary closures or adjustments, in response to extreme heat. However, the unions emphasize that these are short-term fixes and that a systemic approach to improving school infrastructure is crucial for ensuring a conducive learning environment for all students.
