I tested Samsung's new marvel: It offers a potential breakthrough but has several flaws

Samsung has taken a bold step with its new foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold8, potentially heralding a new era for smartphones. Building on its pioneering foldable screen trend initiated in 2019, Samsung now offers a wider and lower variant, the Galaxy Z Fold8. Initial impressions are of pleasant surprise, particularly with the device's noticeably lower and wider profile compared to standard tall smartphones.

While some users might find screens larger than 6.1 inches impractical for one-handed use, the Fold8's width exceeds 8 centimeters when folded. Its most distinctive feature is its compact, square form factor, boasting an external display of only 5.5 inches. The phone has garnered significant attention, with many people inquiring about the device, and some recognizing it from Samsung's pervasive recent advertising.

During several days of use as a primary mobile phone, the compact practicality and lighter weight (201 grams) of the Fold8 were appreciated. However, Samsung still needs to address several shortcomings. While it boasts flagship specifications in most areas, the cameras do not match those of the Galaxy Fold8 Ultra, notably lacking a telephoto camera. The company's compromises on cameras, occasional phone overheating, and the high price point are the most significant criticisms.

Despite these issues, the Fold8's strengths include its two exceptionally high-quality displays, powerful performance, improved battery life, useful software features, and the ability to multitask on the unfolded screen. Samsung's general reliability and stable, secure software further bolster its appeal. The new Galaxy Z Fold8 features a wider external display with a 10:16 aspect ratio when folded. Although initially perceived as potentially awkward, this wider screen proved more practical for typing and everyday activities than on previous Samsung Fold models.
