Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed that he received strong advice against supporting former state governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel's bid for the Senate in the 2023 general election. Critics warned Abiodun that Daniel might eventually turn against him politically.

Despite these warnings, Abiodun stated he proceeded with his support for Daniel, driven by respect for his position as a former governor and a personal conviction that political disagreements should not erode mutual respect. The governor expressed concern over Daniel's recent foundation relaunch, which featured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, as a guest of honor. Abiodun interpreted this event as a potential sign that Daniel might be operating outside the APC's mainstream, despite his respected status within the state's political landscape.
