ICE accused of pressuring detainees after Mexican man's death in Houston

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is reportedly pressuring three individuals detained during an operation that resulted in the death of Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas. Juan Proaño, executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), stated that the detainees are being coerced into signing "orders of self-expulsion." Proaño emphasized that these men, who were with Salgado at the time of the incident, are direct witnesses and hold crucial information about what transpired.

Salgado Araujo died on Tuesday after an ICE agent shot him during an attempted arrest. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Salgado allegedly attempted to evade arrest, refused verbal commands, and then tried to ram an ICE agent with his vehicle. The agent reportedly fired in self-defense. Salgado was transported to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Salgado was accompanied by his brother and two coworkers, all of whom were also detained. LULAC and Salgado's family, along with Democratic lawmakers, are calling for an independent investigation into the shooting. They are demanding that ICE present evidence supporting its version of events, including video footage of the arrest, citing previous cases where witness videos contradicted official agency statements.

LULAC has also offered a $5,000 reward for information or videos related to the circumstances of Salgado's death. The organization is advocating for transparency and accountability in the handling of immigration enforcement operations, particularly following incidents that result in fatalities. The family is seeking justice and a thorough examination of the events leading to Salgado's death.
