ICE Halts Traffic Stops for Apprehensions After Fatal Shootings

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has halted the use of traffic stops to apprehend immigrants, a significant policy shift implemented after two recent fatal shootings involving ICE officers. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has directed its ICE officers to no longer stop moving vehicles for the purpose of arresting or questioning individuals inside.

This directive comes in the wake of two separate fatal encounters. On Monday, an ICE officer shot and killed a 26-year-old Colombian man in Maine. An ICE spokesperson stated the vehicle "attempted to flee the scene, and due to concerns for public safety, the officer fired their weapon." Human rights groups identified the victim as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, who reportedly held a valid work permit and lived with his wife and young daughter.

These officers have faced considerable public opposition nationwide due to their aggressive tactics, particularly following earlier incidents this year where ICE officers fatally shot two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis.
