Iceland movement holds anti-EU accession meeting in Egilsstaðir

The movement 'Áfram Ísland' (Forward Iceland) is hosting a public meeting in Egilsstaðir today, aiming to rally opposition to any renewed accession talks with the European Union. The gathering, scheduled for 5:30 PM at Berjaya Hótel Hérað, is part of the movement's broader campaign ahead of a national referendum on August 29.

This marks the fourth such meeting organized by 'Áfram Ísland,' with previous events held in Reykjavík, Akranes, and Selfoss. The movement's core message is to prevent Iceland from re-engaging in negotiations to join the EU, a topic that remains a significant point of discussion in Icelandic politics.

The Egilsstaðir meeting will be moderated by lawyer Hilmar Gunnlaugsson. A diverse panel of four speakers will present their views: Aðalsteinn Jónsson, a former farmer; Anton Berg Sævarsson, a carpenter and economics student; Ásmundur Hálfdán Ásmundsson, a technical manager at Alcoa Fjarðaráll; and Herdís Magna Gunnarsdóttir, a dairy farmer from Egilsstaðir. The event is open to the public and will also be available via livestream.
