Icelandic authorities release suspect in fatal assault case

A man arrested in Iceland in connection with a fatal assault has been released from custody, his lawyer confirmed. The individual was taken into "robust custody" in Gnoðarvogur but was freed before the Court of Appeal could consider his challenge to the detention order.

The man is one of thirteen people arrested in connection with an assault in Vallargerði on Kársnes, which led to the death of a Polish man in his fifties. Four individuals remain in custody: two in Iceland, one in Poland, and another in Spain. The released man, who is of the same nationality as the deceased, denies any connection to the crime.

His lawyer, Elimar Hauksson, expressed optimism that the investigation against his client will be dropped. "There are expectations that my client will no longer be under investigation in connection with this terrible crime that appears to have been committed," Hauksson stated.

The case involves a complex international dimension, with arrests made across multiple countries. The investigation continues to determine the full circumstances and responsible parties in the fatal assault.
