IDF drafts new principles document outlining values as discipline declines, elections near - report

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is undertaking the creation of an official "foundational principles document" aimed at clarifying the military's values and establishing clear boundaries for conduct. This initiative comes amid concerns over a reported decline in discipline within the ranks.

The document is also intended to reinforce the IDF's nonpartisan stance as elections approach. The chief of staff has stressed the importance of keeping politics out of the military, and the new principles are expected to outline policies that support this objective. The document is slated for finalization and distribution to commanders in the coming weeks.

Recent months have seen discussions within the General Staff presenting data that indicates a notable drop in discipline. This decline has manifested in disregard for military orders and ethical lapses, some of which have drawn media attention. The IDF has taken action in several cases, including a soldier sentenced to 30 days in military prison for wearing an unauthorized "Messiah" patch, and another soldier punished for desecrating a religious Christian symbol and filming the act.

In one instance, a soldier was sentenced to 21 days in military prison for desecrating a religious symbol in southern Lebanon, while another received 14 days for filming the incident. Both soldiers were removed from combat roles. Six other soldiers present at the scene faced strong criticism for failing to intervene or report the misconduct, with the IDF stating their actions deviated significantly from military orders and values.
