IG did not issue ‘shoot-on-sight’ order in Benue — Police

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified remarks made by Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, stating he did not issue a "shoot-on-sight" order. Reports had circulated that Disu instructed officers to shoot anyone found with illegal firearms during a stakeholders' meeting in Benue State.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, did not issue any ‘shoot-on-sight’ order as widely misreported.

The Force issued a clarification on Saturday, explaining that the IGP's comments were in reference to Force Order 237. This order outlines the legal and operational conditions under which police officers may use firearms. The police emphasized that officers are aware of these rules and know when to deploy their weapons according to established Rules of Engagement.

What he actually said was that officers have been briefed on Force Order 237, which governs the legal and operational conditions for firearm use, and that they know when it is appropriate to deploy their weapons in line with established Rules of Engagement.

In a video accompanying the clarification, Disu stated that police are the only ones authorized to carry arms and that illegal arms possession and killings will not be tolerated. He stressed that officers have been briefed on Force Order 237 and do not require superior orders to act when necessary. The IGP also expressed frustration over the loss of police officers and security personnel, indicating that officers have been trained to take appropriate action.
