IJTI: Hotman Paris's statement demeans journalism profession

The Indonesian Television Journalists Association (IJTI) has strongly condemned lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea for remarks perceived as demeaning and insulting to the journalism profession. IJTI stated that any verbal or non-verbal actions that undermine the dignity of journalists are unacceptable.

Herik Kurniawan, Chairman of IJTI, emphasized that press freedom and journalistic activities are fundamental pillars of democracy, protected by law. He clarified that journalists ask critical questions and seek confirmation not to intimidate, but to fulfill the public's right to accurate and balanced information. This process is a professional obligation to produce fair news coverage.

IJTI reminded the public that journalists operate under a strict Code of Journalistic Ethics. This code mandates independence, accuracy, balance, and good faith in reporting. It also requires journalists to verify information and avoid mixing fact with judgmental opinion, upholding the principle of presumed innocence.

The association urged mutual respect and ethical communication between professions. IJTI also advised that any objections to journalistic work should be addressed through established legal channels, such as the right of reply, the right to correct, or by lodging complaints with the Press Council, rather than through public intimidation or harassment. IJTI instructed its members to continue working professionally and uphold journalistic ethics without fear.
