Iker Muniain Appointed New Coach of San Lorenzo

In a surprising turn of events, San Lorenzo has appointed former player Iker Muniain as its new head coach. The decision comes just days after the club parted ways with Gustavo Álvarez, whose tenure was cut short by disagreements over squad composition.

Muniain, who played for San Lorenzo until June 2025, is expected to arrive in Argentina this week to take charge of the professional squad. His appointment follows a period of institutional and sporting uncertainty for the club, especially after their early exit from the Copa Sudamericana.

The departure of Álvarez occurred just before the pre-season training began, reportedly due to conflicts with the football department regarding players who were to be excluded from the team. Walter Perazzo has been temporarily leading the squad of 51 professionals since then.

Several names were considered for the coaching position, including Rubén Darío Insúa and Néstor Gorosito, but none generated unanimous support. Muniain's name emerged rapidly in the last 48 hours and quickly gained traction among club directors and the professional football department. His swift agreement and acceptance have paved the way for his immediate return to Buenos Aires.

Muniain, 33, will be taking over a team that has seen many young players featured. His debut is scheduled for July 17 against Deportivo Riestra in the Copa Argentina. This move also signifies his immediate departure from Spain's CD Derio and the historic Salamanca club, where he had recently been presented. Muniain's contract included a low-cost exit clause, facilitating his move without financial penalty to the coach.
