Illegal Israeli Blockades Encroach Deeper into Gaza, Displacing Families

Israel's military is systematically expanding a network of earth barriers and shifting demarcation markers deeper into the Gaza Strip, displacing Palestinian families and fueling concerns about a prolonged occupation. This expansion goes beyond the boundaries agreed upon in an October ceasefire, according to a BBC News report.

The ceasefire agreement, brokered by the U.S. between Israel and Hamas, stipulated that Israeli forces would withdraw to a designated demarcation known as the Yellow Line, leaving Israel in temporary control of 53% of Gaza's territory. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently stated the military controlled over 60% of the territory and aimed to increase it to 70%. Hamas contends that Israel is violating the agreement by pushing the Yellow Line westward.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) described its actions as defensive measures to prevent infiltrations, declining to provide specific details on the barrier's route for security reasons. Despite initial boundary markers made of concrete blocks, Israel has since constructed a barrier network stretching over 42 kilometers, covering 85% of the Yellow Line. Sections of these embankments extend significantly beyond the mapped line, with one section near the al-Mawasi camp extending over 1.5 kilometers past the boundary and another in Khan Younis exceeding 500 meters.

These shifting markers have led to renewed evacuations for displaced Palestinians. In northern Gaza's al-Tuffah neighborhood, residents reported yellow concrete blocks moved westward, with an Israeli flag atop an earth barrier. Similar displacements occurred east of Gaza City in the Zeitoun area following an IDF evacuation order, resulting in dozens of families losing their shelters. Residents described shooting from military vehicles, drone activity, and shelling as heavy machinery constructed new bases and earth banks.

Satellite imagery and verified video analyzed by BBC News show land cleared, olive groves destroyed, and numerous buildings demolished beyond the Yellow Line in various Gaza locations, including Khan Yunis, Deir al-Balah, Rafah, Jabalia, and Beit Lahia. The military has also established 14 new positions along the boundary and expanded seven existing sites since the ceasefire. Palestinians argue these changes further restrict an already displaced population of over two million people, stating, "The Yellow Line keeps moving."
