Saudi Arabia launches maritime coalition amid regional conflict spread

Saudi Arabia unveiled plans on Thursday for a multinational maritime defense coalition aimed at safeguarding shipping and energy supply routes in the strategically vital Red Sea region. The announcement came amid a significant escalation of Middle East tensions, with the conflict spreading across new fronts.

The proposed coalition, which Saudi Arabia will lead and host, seeks to bolster maritime security, ensure freedom of navigation, and protect international trade routes and energy supplies. The initiative addresses growing concerns over increasing threats to maritime security, including attacks on commercial vessels, energy tankers, and critical maritime infrastructure.

Discussions during the meeting, attended by representatives from 43 countries and the European Union, focused on the rising threats to maritime safety and the potential disruption to global supply chains and the international economy. Participants reviewed the draft charter for the Multinational Maritime Defence Coalition, its organizational structure, and operational plans.

The announcement coincided with a series of escalating incidents. The United States reported striking Iran's Revolutionary Guards' military command centers and drone facilities after Iran fired on U.S. forces. Iran, in turn, claimed its forces attacked U.S. assets in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, and alleged that U.S. strikes in Iraq killed civilians and Guards members. Meanwhile, Egypt reported that an unidentified drone caused a fire on two vessels at the port of Damietta, with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warning of a serious escalation.
