Ilya Espino de Marotta takes the helm of the Panama Canal facing major challenges

Ilya Espino de Marotta will take charge of the Panama Canal on Monday, September 7, becoming the first woman to hold the waterway’s top position since it returned to Panamanian control.

Espino de Marotta will lead the Panama Canal Authority from 2026 through 2033. Her administration will confront the need to protect the canal’s sustainability, competitiveness and operations, as the waterway remains one of the world’s main trade routes.

She brings four decades of experience inside the institution. Her work has included engineering, dredging, the canal expansion, sustainability, accounting and operations. In 2020, she became the first woman to serve as deputy administrator. Six years later, she is setting another precedent as administrator.

Former canal administrator Jorge Luis Quijano highlighted the breadth of her experience. He said she had worked in more divisions than he had, including engineering, dredging, expansion, deputy administration, sustainability and accounting. She also worked in operations as coordinator of the institution’s investment plan.

The canal’s board announced her appointment in May. At the time, Espino de Marotta pledged to support Panama, its customers and the institution’s strategic planning. “I commit to continuing to do my best for our country, supporting our customers, ensuring that future and that strategic planning we have so that Panama as a country continues to grow,” she said.

Her administration is expected to continue projects aimed at strengthening the canal’s capacity. It will also face water availability for operations, growing demand, competition from other transport routes and the need to preserve reliability as international trade changes.
