IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva to visit Argentina, meet Milei and tour Vaca Muerta

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva arrives in Buenos Aires on Monday for a two-day institutional visit, her first to Argentina since assuming leadership of the global financial institution in 2019. The visit marks the first time a top IMF official has visited the Argentine capital in eight years. Georgieva's packed schedule includes crucial meetings with President Javier Milei, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, and Central Bank President Santiago Bausili. She is also slated to tour Vaca Muerta, a significant energy-producing region, and engage with workers and representatives from energy companies. The IMF holds a substantial financial stake in Argentina, which is its largest debtor by a wide margin, with outstanding credits amounting to approximately $57.7 billion. This visit underscores the ongoing economic relationship and Argentina's reliance on IMF support. Georgieva's itinerary also features a press conference, meetings with government officials, and engagements with students and business leaders before she departs for Montevideo on Wednesday.
