IMF Managing Director to Meet Milei in Buenos Aires on Monday

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva is scheduled to meet with Argentine President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires on Monday, July 27, 2026. The meeting, confirmed by official sources on Sunday, will take place at 2:00 PM local time and will later include other members of the Argentine Cabinet. This visit underscores the ongoing dialogue between Argentina and the IMF regarding the country's economic program.

Following the meeting, Georgieva is expected to hold a press conference at the Ministry of Economy and deliver a keynote address at the Libertad Palace in Buenos Aires. Additionally, she plans to visit Vaca Muerta, located in the province of Neuquén. This region holds the world's second-largest unconventional natural gas reserves and the fourth-largest unconventional oil reserves, currently experiencing increasing investment and production.

Argentina's relationship with the IMF has a long and complex history, marked by numerous agreements. The current administration under President Milei signed a new agreement on April 11, 2025, the 23rd such pact. A key objective of this extended fund facility is to bolster the Central Bank's reserves with approximately $20 billion in credits. Despite Argentina missing the reserve accumulation target in the first review, the IMF approved the second review in May, releasing an immediate disbursement of $1 billion, bringing total disbursements under the current program to $15.8 billion. While reserve accumulation has improved, Argentina's debt to the IMF stands at about $57.87 billion, making it the Fund's largest debtor.
