Immigration Driver Charged, Suspended After Fatal Accident Kills Family of Three

An immigration driver involved in a fatal accident that killed a family of three has been suspended and charged in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court. The Immigration Department has also established a special investigation committee to thoroughly examine the fatal accident involving one of its lorries at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection.

Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban stated that the internal investigation will focus on compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), and appropriate action will be taken based on the committee's findings. "The department's immediate action is to suspend the driver involved until the case is concluded. We are fully cooperating with the police in this case. JIM is also conducting an internal investigation regarding SOP compliance," he said.

Zakaria added that all aspects of the incident will be reviewed by the department's investigation committee before any further action is decided. "JIM will not compromise on any procedural violations or negligence, if identified, and action will be taken based on the investigation's findings," he explained.

Media reported that three family members died after being hit by a JIM lorry that skidded at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection. In the incident, around 1 a.m., the JIM 'Black Maria' Isuzu lorry, without any load, was believed to be traveling from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office towards Chow Kit for an illegal immigrant (PATI) operation. It entered the intersection while its traffic light was red, with its beacon and siren activated.

At the same time, a Proton Saga car, moving straight through a green light, was reportedly unable to avoid the collision, causing the lorry to lose control and skid, hitting four pedestrians, a family, and an Inokom Matrix car. The three victims, Shaik Mohd Firdaus Shaikh Yahya, 53, and his two daughters, Siti Nor Sazlin, 25, and Siti Darwisyah Auni, 12, died at the scene.
