IMPI Report: Over 8,000 Terrorists Neutralised Under Tinubu Since 2023

Nigeria's war against terrorism has achieved notable tactical successes, neutralizing over 8,000 bandits and terrorists since 2023, according to a new study by the Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI).

From our study of the federal administration’s counter-terrorism efforts, it is indisputable that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has recorded notable tactical successes in the fight against banditry.

The policy statement, signed by IMPI Chairman Dr. Omoniyi Akinsiju, asserts that police and military offensives have also led to the arrest of 11,600 criminals and the recovery of thousands of weapons. "It is indisputable that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has recorded notable tactical successes in the fight against banditry," the report states.

IMPI cited recent operations, including Operation HADIN KAI troops rescuing 360 kidnapped victims from a terrorist enclave in Borno State on June 6, 2026. Other rescue operations mentioned include those in Kogi, Kwara, and Kebbi states, freeing numerous individuals abducted by kidnappers and bandits.

Between 2023 and now, the police and military offensives have led to the neutralisation of over 8,000 bandits and terrorists, with 11,600 criminals arrested, and the recovery of thousands of weapons.

The report also detailed strategies employed by security agencies, such as Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) before launching air strikes, and swift, aggressive pursuit operations into difficult terrains. These tactics aim to pressure insurgents, leading them to abandon captives and flee.

As recently as 6 June, 2026, Operation HADIN KAI troops rescued 360 kidnapped victims from a heavily fortified terrorist enclave hidden deep within the Mandara Mountains of Borno State.
