Important changes for National Evaluation and Baccalaureate 2027: Exams could start earlier

Romania's Ministry of Education is proposing significant modifications to the National Evaluation and Baccalaureate exams scheduled for 2027. The planned changes aim to enhance the fairness and accuracy of the grading process, particularly for papers where initial evaluations show considerable differences between examiners.

A central proposal involves a new multi-stage re-evaluation system. For the National Evaluation, if the difference between the two assigned grades for Romanian language and literature or mother tongue exams exceeds one point, the examiners will be automatically notified for a reassessment. For mathematics, this threshold is set at 0.50 points. Should the discrepancy persist after this review, the paper will be randomly forwarded to two additional teachers for a final evaluation. The ultimate grade will be determined by averaging the two central scores after discarding the two extreme scores, without rounding.

A similar mechanism is proposed for the Baccalaureate exams. If the digital evaluation platform detects a difference greater than one point between the grades given by the two initial examiners for any written test, they will be prompted to re-evaluate. If the difference remains, the paper will be sent to two other randomly selected teachers. The final grade will be calculated using the same method: averaging the two middle scores after removing the highest and lowest.

Modifications are also planned for the appeals process. At the National Evaluation, if the difference between the initial grade and the grade resulting from an appeal is more than one point, the original examiners will be notified for a re-analysis. If the difference persists, two different teachers will conduct a new evaluation. For the Baccalaureate, the threshold for this re-evaluation during appeals is reduced from 1.5 points to one point. If the difference remains above one point after the initial appeal review, two additional teachers will reassess the paper.
