In Colima, Sheinbaum puts ban on dual or triple nationality for presidents to public vote and attacks Fox-Alito meeting

Claudia Sheinbaum turned a public assembly in Colima into a vote on her proposed constitutional ban on dual or triple nationality for anyone who becomes president of Mexico. The audience backed the initiative unanimously by a show of hands.

Sheinbaum said the country’s president must hold only Mexican nationality and must not be accountable to another country. “I think no president, man or woman, should have dual nationality. They must be only Mexican; they cannot be accountable to another country,” she said. “Let it be clearly established in the Constitution.”

The president linked the proposal to national sovereignty and Mexico’s history of defending itself against foreign powers since independence. On Aug. 27, she sent Congress a constitutional reform initiative that would require people seeking the presidency or a state governorship to renounce any second nationality.

At the same event, Sheinbaum attacked a recent meeting between former President Vicente Fox and PRI national leader Alejandro “Alito” Moreno. The meeting took place at the PRI headquarters as the two explored a possible opposition front ahead of the 2027 electoral process.

“Yesterday Fox met with Alito, imagine that. It is about remembering the past, right? They want to return to the past of corruption,” Sheinbaum said. She also criticized privatizations during Carlos Salinas de Gortari’s administration, citing the sale of state television channels that became TV Azteca. During the event, she asked demonstrators disrupting her speech to remain silent and not be “disrespectful.”
