In Deft Move, Tinubu Directs EFCC to Unfreeze Osun Account

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has intervened in a controversial move by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), ordering the agency to unfreeze an account belonging to the Osun State government. The EFCC had frozen the account shortly after the inauguration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

President Tinubu reportedly called Governor Adeleke to express his "deep embarrassment" over the timing of the EFCC's action. This intervention suggests a potential disagreement between the presidency and the anti-graft body regarding its operational independence or the appropriateness of its timing.

The situation has drawn criticism from opposition figures. Supporters of Atiku Abubakar and the Accord Party have faulted the claim that anti-graft agencies operate independently. They urged President Tinubu to also direct the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to unfreeze the account of Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor, highlighting a broader concern about the use of such agencies in political contexts.

The Accord Party specifically alleged that the EFCC's action against Osun State was politically motivated. The controversy underscores ongoing debates in Nigeria about the independence and impartiality of its anti-corruption institutions.
