In Muğla, Umut’s Bicycle Brings Hope to Other Children

A new bicycle given to Umut, a child whose bike was damaged in a fire in Muğla’s Seydikemer district, has led to bicycles reaching other children in the fire-affected area.

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality identified the damage to Umut’s bicycle while assessing four neighborhoods affected by the fire. Its teams soon delivered him a replacement. After news of the gift appeared in the media, a bicycle company contacted the municipality and offered bikes for other children in the disaster zone.

The wounds from the great fire we experienced are being healed.

Municipal teams consulted families identified during the damage assessments and neighborhood heads to determine which children had lost or damaged bicycles. The bicycles donated by the company were then delivered to families by the municipality’s Health and Social Services Department.

Umut joined the distribution and did not leave his friends alone. Dereköy neighborhood head Birol Koyuncu thanked donors, supporters and municipal workers, saying the gifts helped bring happiness to children while the community worked to heal after the major fire.

Elif Yaman, a girl from Dere neighborhood who was affected by the fire, said she was very happy to receive her bicycle. Muğla Mayor Ahmet Aras said the municipality had supported residents from the first moments of the fires, including with help for farmland, greenhouses, livestock, animal feed, shelter and bicycles.

It also made us happy to serve as a channel for citizens who wanted to support the fire-affected area.
