In Welcome to National Customer Day, PLN UID Yogyakarta Encourages SPKLU Development in Tourist Areas

PT PLN (Persero) Unit Induk Distribusi (UID) Yogyakarta is actively promoting the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations within the Special Region of Yogyakarta's tourist destinations. This initiative, launched in anticipation of National Customer Day 2026, signifies PLN's commitment to fostering a robust electric vehicle ecosystem and enhancing the modern, convenient, and eco-friendly tourism experience.

Deri Prasetio Utomo, General Manager of PLN UID Yogyakarta, emphasized that strengthening the EV ecosystem in tourist areas aligns with PLN's service transformation, focusing on customer needs and sustainability. "On this National Customer Day, PLN is committed to delivering services that offer the utmost convenience and the best experience for our customers," he stated. "Beyond providing reliable electricity, we are also championing a clean energy ecosystem that supports public mobility and the growth of the tourism sector. Developing EV charging stations in tourist areas is a strategic move to add value for customers and position Yogyakarta as a modern, sustainable tourist destination."

The expansion plans were discussed during a meeting between PLN UP3 Yogyakarta and Wonosari and the Yogyakarta City Tourism Office. This collaboration aims to strengthen synergy and identify opportunities for integrating EV infrastructure with tourism sites. Muh Zandaru Budi Purwanto, Secretary of the Yogyakarta City Tourism Office, highlighted the importance of charging facilities for developing EV-based tourism. "We hope PLN can build more charging stations in Yogyakarta City, for both tourist vehicles and traditional transport like electric rickshaws, which we are developing," Zandaru said. He suggested initial installations in three key tourist areas: the Philosophical Axis including Malioboro, Kotabaru, and the southern Yogyakarta region.

Agung Pratomo, Manager of PLN UP3 Yogyakarta and Wonosari, explained that developing charging infrastructure is part of PLN's effort to offer easier and more convenient services for EV users. "PLN continuously strives to ensure network readiness and explore customer needs on the ground," he noted. "In developing the EV ecosystem in tourist areas, we see an opportunity to provide integrated charging facilities at destinations. This allows customers to charge their vehicles while enjoying tourist activities, eliminating the need to allocate separate time for finding charging locations."

Pratomo further elaborated on the concept of charging at tourist destinations as an alternative service for travelers. While Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) are common, PLN is exploring integrating charging into the tourist experience. "Medium or slow charging concepts can be ideal for destinations with longer visitor stays," he explained. "This way, tourists can charge their vehicles concurrently with their activities, without needing to find a dedicated charging spot." Gembira Loka Zoo is one of the locations being considered for this concept, with potential for similar developments across various other sites.
