INALUM strengthens peatland fire response in Mempawah

Fires burning in peatland in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, have created a difficult firefighting challenge because flames can spread and persist beneath the surface. Crews must repeatedly search the area and cool suspected hot spots.

INALUM and its subsidiary, PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia, have worked with local authorities, the BNPB and BPBD disaster agencies, the military, police, firefighters, volunteers and residents to control fires at several locations since August 24, 2026.

On September 4, INALUM and MIND ID sent 60 certified firefighters to strengthen the operation. The team included personnel from INALUM, ANTAM, Bukit Asam, Timah, Freeport Indonesia and Vale Indonesia. MIND ID President Director Maroef Sjamsoeddin coordinated the deployment and inspected affected areas.

INALUM also supplied firefighting equipment, safety gear and medical support for volunteers and affected residents, including emergency health facilities and personal protective equipment.
