Incheon Airport becomes world's busiest in first half of year

Incheon International Airport, serving Seoul, has surged to become the world's busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic for the first six months of this year. The South Korean hub handled an impressive 38.4 million passengers, placing it ahead of major international airports.

London Heathrow Airport followed in second place with 37.8 million passengers, while Singapore's Changi Airport secured the third position, processing 34.5 million travelers. This significant achievement marks a substantial leap for Incheon, which ranked 12th and 13th in the previous two years.

According to the BBC, Incheon's ascent to the top spot is partly due to the redirection of passenger flow from major Middle Eastern airports. This shift is influenced by the ongoing geopolitical situation involving the USA and Iran, which has disrupted travel patterns through traditional transit hubs. Consequently, airports like Dubai International, which previously held high rankings, are expected to fall out of the top five this year.

Incheon has also benefited from its own strategic development. The airport has seen an 18% increase in passenger numbers compared to the same period last year. Notably, transfer passengers heading to Europe via Incheon surged by 63.2%, reaching 210,000 individuals in the first half of the year.

Further bolstering its position, Incheon has expanded its infrastructure and route network. The airport currently serves 158 destinations, significantly more than competitors like Hong Kong (139 destinations), Shanghai Pudong (92), and Tokyo Narita (86). This extensive connectivity, combined with the redirection of global travel patterns, has solidified Incheon's status as a leading global aviation hub.
