Incheon Airport named world's busiest international hub in early 2026

Incheon International Airport has claimed the title of the world's busiest international hub for the first half of 2026, surpassing rivals like London Heathrow and Singapore Changi. The South Korean airport served 38.39 million international passengers, setting a new Airports Council International record and highlighting its growing global significance.

This surge in passenger traffic is partly fueled by geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Uncertainty following U.S. attacks on Iran led to a decrease in passengers at hubs like Dubai and Heathrow, with Incheon absorbing many of these travelers. The airport saw an 18.1% increase in transfer passengers, particularly those heading to Europe, which rose by 63.2%.

Beyond transfer traffic, Incheon's success is also driven by a rise in international tourists, especially from China and Japan. Foreign nationals constituted a record 44.4% of all passengers in the second quarter of 2026. The airport's continuous infrastructure expansion, including the completion of its Phase 4 construction, has equipped it to handle 106 million people annually, boasting the world's third-best infrastructure.

With 101 airlines serving 183 cities across 53 countries, Incheon offers a more extensive international network than its competitors. The airport has also strategically attracted airlines, such as Delta Airlines making it its Asian hub. Looking ahead, Incheon plans to further strengthen its competitiveness through AI-driven transformations and the development of urban air mobility infrastructure, aiming to solidify its position as a leading global aviation center.
