Incumbent Lawmaker Chun Ha-ram Enlists for Military Training, Citing Policy Needs

Chun Ha-ram, the floor leader of the New Reform Party, has made history by becoming the first incumbent member of the National Assembly to enlist for basic military training. He entered the Army's 27th Recruit Training Center in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, for a three-day program, aiming to directly experience military life and inform his policy-making.

Chun's decision to undergo training with regular recruits underscores his commitment to grounding his policy work in reality. He had his hair cut short before entering the facility on April 12. His first day involved receiving combat uniforms and equipment, followed by preparations for training in the barracks. The following day includes early wake-ups, simulated combat drills, a 20-kilometer night march, and guard duty.

Speaking on CBS Radio the day before his enlistment, Chun explained his motivation: "As I'm joining the Defense Committee, I want to update my experience beyond my existing military background to discuss defense policy," he said. "I believe this will lead to more realistic policies."

The New Reform Party stated that Chun's initiative stems from his principle that "policy originates not from a desk but from the field." They added that he intends to experience firsthand the living conditions and treatment of soldiers serving the nation, even amidst extreme weather, to reflect these insights in his future work on the Defense Committee and in policy inquiries.
