“Indecent”, “Ridiculous”, “I’m Tired of This Way of Doing Politics”: Francophone Party Leaders Clash in Heated Debate

The microphones were barely open before Belgium's five French-speaking party leaders launched into a fierce debate over purchasing power. In a political climate already marked by sharp divisions on budgets and social policy, the RTL discussion quickly became a contest of accusations and rebuttals.

Opposition leaders accused the Arizona coalition of taking money from the middle class, workers and pensioners. MR leader Georges-Louis Bouchez promised that the middle class would be protected. Yvan Verougstraete of Engagés countered that “everyone” would have to contribute.

Capital taxation produced another direct confrontation. Bouchez said his position was clear: “No tax, period. I do not want to protect the rich, I want to protect all our citizens.” PS leader Paul Magnette responded that Bouchez's repeated calls for no taxes made him smile. Magnette said nine out of 10 Belgians had seen their purchasing power deteriorate and called for consistency between political actions and taxation.

The argument then shifted to fossil fuels. Bouchez attacked the opposition's call to move away from fossil fuels while also seeking lower prices at the pump when costs rise. “I’m tired of this way of doing politics. It’s becoming ridiculous,” he said. He added that, in his lifetime, the world would not become free of fossil fuels.

The opposition defended the ability of Europe and Belgium to move toward cleaner energy. Magnette told Bouchez, “I find you almost climate-sceptic.” The hosts, Caroline Fontenoy and Martin Buxant, ended the debate by asking the party leaders where the government should seek savings.
