India marked its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with nationwide celebrations culminating in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address from the historic Red Fort in New Delhi. This year's event held special significance, also commemorating the 150th anniversary of the patriotic song "Vande Mataram," which was performed from the Red Fort for the first time before the national anthem.

An estimated 27,000 people, including young innovators, entrepreneurs, and students, were invited to witness the festivities. To ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the celebrations, Delhi was transformed into a fortress. Authorities implemented a multi-layered anti-terror response plan, deploying over 1,000 CCTV cameras equipped with AI-based video analytics. Live feeds were continuously monitored from a dedicated control room, with additional checks and screening at the Red Fort venue.

Security arrangements were designed to minimize inconvenience to attendees while maintaining a high level of vigilance, particularly in light of incidents reported in the capital the previous year. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation facilitated the large crowds by commencing services earlier than usual, with trains running at frequent intervals. Traffic restrictions and diversions were also in effect across the city to manage the flow of vehicles during the event.
