India's 'Cockroach' youth protest forces minister's resignation, exam reforms

A satirical political movement on social media has evolved into one of the most visible youth mobilizations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. The "Cockroach" movement, or Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), successfully pressured the resignation of the Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, and spurred reforms in the national examination system.

The CJP's primary demand was Pradhan's resignation, holding him responsible for alleged leaks and irregularities in official exams, particularly the NEET-UG, a highly competitive medical entrance test. Millions of Indian youth and families view these exams as crucial for accessing higher education and public employment.

Following weeks of government resistance, Pradhan resigned after direct negotiations with CJP representatives. In response to the crisis, the government proposed a bill to increase penalties for exam fraud, including up to ten years in prison and substantial fines. A high-level task force, led by tech expert Nandan Nilekani, will also review the assessment system to bolster its credibility.

The protests also highlighted issues of police conduct. During demonstrations near Parliament, police used batons, tear gas, and pellet guns against protesters. In one incident in Bihar, an officer was suspended after a video emerged showing him with an AK-47 during a student protest. The Supreme Court has ordered an independent investigation into police violence and mandated the preservation of all related evidence, while also ordering the release of detained protesters without prior criminal records.
