India’s Prime Minister Calls for an End to the War in Ukraine

Narendra Modi used a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Bishkek to say that the war in Ukraine should end as soon as possible. “For every day the war continues, humanity is pushed one step backward,” Modi said, according to Kommersant.

Modi added, “We must move in that direction,” addressing Putin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation gathering in Kyrgyzstan. The appeal did not amount to a criticism of Russia’s conduct of the war, the account said. Putin replied, “Thank you very much, Mr. Prime Minister, we are moving in that direction.”

Putin praised Modi’s personal contribution to the warm relationship between India and Russia. Their meeting took place as close partners of the Russian president gathered for the SCO meeting, an organisation founded in 2001 that includes Russia, India, China and several former Soviet republics in Central Asia.

Putin also met Xi Jinping and highlighted visa cooperation between Russia and China, which has increased tourism. China and India have both sharply increased imports of Russian oil since 2022.

The meeting’s motto was “For sustainable peace, development and prosperity.” Modi also attended the opening of the World Nomad Games during his visit to Bishkek.
