Our Ministry of External Affairs has summoned the Iranian ambassador to lodge a formal protest, underscoring the critical importance India places on the safety of merchant shipping and its mariners. While the representative of Iran's Supreme Leader in India, Dr. Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, claimed ignorance of the specific incident, he did emphasize the "very strong" relationship between Iran and India, rooted in millennia of shared history and culture. He asserted Iran's preference for peace over war. However, this statement, while perhaps intended to de-escalate, does little to address the immediate threat posed to our maritime trade routes. The fact that these tankers were fired upon, regardless of Iran's official stance on the matter, demands a thorough investigation and clear assurances of future safety.

The Prime Minister of India had very successful conversations with the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, and the EAM had several successful conversations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran.
