India teams search for survivors after Delhi building collapse kills six

At least six people died when a multistorey building collapsed near a Delhi University campus in New Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, leaving dozens feared trapped beneath the rubble.

Rescue teams from India’s disaster response agency, police and fire services used earthmovers and detection dogs to search the wreckage. Fire officer Abhilash Malik said as many as 40 people could remain trapped, although the number of survivors and the cause of the collapse were not immediately known.

The building housed mostly students. A nearby structure was evacuated because of concerns that it could also collapse. Residents tried to rescue people before specialized response teams arrived, and a video filmed by a man trapped under the debris circulated online as bystanders called for help.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences said it treated 10 patients. Five arrived dead, while another patient in critical condition later died from his injuries.

Building collapses occur frequently in parts of India during the rainy season from June to September. A three-storey building also collapsed in northern India after heavy rain on Saturday, but no one was killed. In 2025, at least 11 people died when a residential building collapsed in northeastern New Delhi.
