India, US ink $292 million deal for Javelin anti-tank missiles

India and the United States have finalized a significant defense agreement, with India set to acquire approximately 60 Javelin anti-tank guided missiles for its army. The deal, valued at around Rs292 crore (approximately $292 million), was concluded under India's emergency procurement powers. These powers allow defense forces to make critical acquisitions to enhance their capabilities, particularly in the aftermath of recent operations like Operation Sindoor last year.

Deliveries of the battle-tested Javelin systems are anticipated to commence by the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year. This timeline is particularly relevant as several defense suppliers have requested extensions for delivery schedules due to ongoing disruptions caused by conflicts in West Asia. The procurement underscores India's commitment to modernizing its military hardware and addressing immediate security needs.

U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, hailed the agreement as a "BIG news" and a "great step forward in the U.S.-India defense relationship." He noted that the deal opens possibilities for co-production, signaling a deepening strategic partnership between the two nations. The engagement between India and the U.S. is currently at record high levels, with this missile deal being a prime example of their enhanced defense cooperation.

The Javelin missile system is a well-established, fire-and-forget anti-tank weapon that has proven effective in numerous conflicts. India's acquisition is in limited numbers due to the financial ceiling of emergency procurement powers, which cap purchases at Rs300 crore per equipment. Concurrently, India is also developing its own indigenous man-portable anti-tank guided missile system, which has undergone multiple trials. The country is also procuring Excalibur precision-guided artillery ammunition under similar emergency powers.
