India Wins Commonwealth Fencing Championships; Nigeria Finishes Fourth as Host

Nigeria showcased its organizational prowess and athletic talent by hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, the first senior-level fencing tournament held in Africa. The event took place at Rugby School Nigeria in Eko Atlantic City, Lagos.

Nigeria delivered a spectacular event at Rugby School Nigeria, Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, showcasing resilience, talent, and organisational excellence.

Team Nigeria achieved a remarkable fourth-place finish overall. A significant highlight was 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwa-Thompson, who made history by clinching Nigeria's inaugural international gold medal in fencing. The debutant wheelchair squad also contributed substantially, securing a notable number of silver and bronze medals. In total, Nigeria earned one gold, five silver, and 18 bronze medals.

The star of the tournament was 17-year-old Oghenegaren Osievwa-Thompson, who made history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever international gold medal in fencing.

India emerged as the clear champions, dominating the six-day competition with an impressive haul of 25 gold, 20 silver, and 18 bronze medals. Their wheelchair team completed a clean sweep on the final day. England secured the second position with three gold, two silver, and nine bronze medals. Wales narrowly edged Nigeria into fourth place with a late gold medal in the men's veteran sabre.

The championships welcomed athletes from 20 nations, with countries like Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Australia, and Singapore also achieving medal success. At the closing ceremony, Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, commended the Nigeria Fencing Federation for elevating the nation in the sport and pledged continued government support, awarding the Nigerian team cash prizes. Adeyinka Samuel, the newly elected first African president of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation and a silver medalist himself, expressed gratitude and committed to sustaining Nigeria's fencing momentum.
