Indian students step up exam protests in Jharkhand

Students in Jharkhand, India, intensified their protests on August 10, marching towards the state assembly to demonstrate against alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations. The demonstrations, which began on July 29 in Ranchi, the state capital, have seen several students, including leader Devendra Nath Mahto, commence a hunger strike. Mahto, who has been fasting for over a week, stated, "We want the whole system to change," demanding an end to the outsourcing of state civil service tests to a private company.

Hundreds of police officers were deployed to guard the assembly, which was fortified with barbed-wire barricades, as repeated talks between protesters and the state government failed to yield an agreement. The students are calling for the cancellation of multiple examinations administered by a private firm on behalf of the state government. They also demand a federal police investigation into the conduct of these tests.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has attempted to de-escalate the situation by accepting some of the protesters' demands. Several members of the civil service body overseeing the examinations have also resigned. Soren stated on August 9, "Every problem can be resolved through dialogue," in an effort to encourage a peaceful resolution.

The protests in Jharkhand mirror a recent youth-led movement in New Delhi, which successfully pressured the national education minister to resign. That movement, organized by the online Cockroach Janta Party, protested examination system failures for 36 days. The Jharkhand protests highlight widespread frustration among young Indians who view government examinations as a critical pathway to employment in a country with intense competition for limited public-sector jobs. Notably, the Jharkhand rallies are directed at the state government, which is politically opposed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
