Indian youth protesters call for nationwide rallies as Delhi imposes tough curbs

India's youth are mobilizing for nationwide demonstrations, demanding the education minister's resignation over widespread leaks in medical school entrance exams. The protests, fueled by allegations of exam irregularities affecting approximately 2 million students and linked to several suicides, have escalated into a significant challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.

Despite the government's appeal for dialogue and its imposition of strict measures in Delhi, including the closure of metro stations and mobile internet services, protesters have rejected the offer. They have called for peaceful nationwide rallies in solidarity with students who claim police brutality during a recent march on parliament. Thousands have returned to the Jantar Mantar protest site, voicing their dissent amid a heavy security presence.

The government's response has included an offer to establish special courts to prosecute those involved in exam paper leaks, a proposal Prime Minister Modi announced on X, stating, "Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth!" However, protest groups, such as the Cockroach Janta Party movement, have dismissed this, viewing it as only one aspect of the crisis.

The protests have gained traction, with opposition parties aligning with the youth movement's demands and disrupting parliamentary sessions. The situation marks a considerable political challenge for Modi's third term, which began in 2024, as demonstrations spread to other cities like Ranchi, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kolkata.
