Indiana Law Changes Minimum Age for Driver's Licenses: Effective Date Announced

Indiana is set to lower the barrier for young drivers, with a new law eliminating the waiting period for 16-year-olds to obtain a provisional driver's license. Previously, aspiring drivers had to wait 90 days after turning 16 to begin the licensing process. However, effective July 1 of this year, 16-year-olds will be eligible to apply for their provisional license on the very day they celebrate their birthday.

This legislative change, part of House Bill 1200 signed by Governor Mike Braun on March 12, also extends to motorcycle licenses. Eligible 16-year-olds can now pursue a motorcycle permit if they meet the necessary requirements, streamlining the process for young individuals seeking to operate two-wheeled vehicles.

Despite the eased restrictions on initial application, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles reminds the public that drivers under 21 will still be issued a provisional license. This permit comes with specific limitations, including a curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the first 180 days of driving. After this period, the curfew is lifted, though exceptions exist for work, authorized school activities, or religious events. Driving with passengers is also restricted for the initial 180 days unless accompanied by a certified instructor or a licensed adult over 25 in the front seat.

The provisional license remains valid until 30 days after the holder turns 21, at which point it can be renewed. The new law aims to provide more flexibility for young drivers while maintaining safety regulations.
