Indicted Corruption Fugitive Caught Trying to Fly for Umrah

Usman Bin Naen, 65, a fugitive convicted of corruption, was apprehended by the Aceh High Prosecutor's Office at Kualanamu International Airport in North Sumatra. He was attempting to embark on an Umrah pilgrimage when authorities intercepted him.

Naen, a retired civil servant, had been on the wanted list by the Bener Meriah District Prosecutor's Office after failing to comply with a court order to serve his sentence. He was convicted in a corruption case related to the development of community tobacco plants in Bener Meriah Regency, funded by the Regional Budget (APBK) in 2013. Naen served as the Technical Implementation Officer (PPTK) for the project.

The fugitive was successfully apprehended based on intensive tracking and search results by the Aceh High Prosecutor's Office Tabur team.

The corruption activities resulted in state financial losses amounting to Rp443.49 million, as determined by an audit from the Aceh Representative of the Financial and Development Supervisory Board (BPKP). The Corruption Crime Court at the Banda Aceh District Court had previously sentenced Naen to 3 years and 6 months in prison and a fine of Rp50 million. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional one-year jail term.

Court proceedings for the case were conducted in Naen's absence. Despite multiple summonses after the verdict, he failed to appear, leading to his designation as a wanted individual. The arrest occurred after the Tabur (fugitive tracking) team received information about his travel plans for Umrah, leading to his capture at the airport. Following his arrest, Naen was taken for administrative and health checks before being transferred to the Bener Meriah District Prosecutor's Office for execution of his sentence.
