Government Pledges to Finalize Asset Seizure Bill This Year

Indonesia's government has reaffirmed its commitment to expedite the passage of a crucial Asset Seizure Bill, aiming for its enactment by the end of 2026. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, and Immigration, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, stated that the government is fully prepared to engage in discussions with the House of Representatives (DPR) once the legislative body concludes its initial drafting process.

"If asked whether the government is ready, yes, it is ready. The government has been ready for some time and has received directives from the President to immediately finalize the Asset Seizure Bill," Mahendra said. He indicated that the government is closely monitoring public sentiment, including planned protests advocating for the bill's swift passage.

The minister emphasized that both the government and the DPR share a common goal to conclude the bill's deliberation by December 2026. Beyond asset seizure, Mahendra also addressed public calls for the death penalty for corruption offenders. He explained that while existing laws permit such sentences, the ultimate decision rests with the judiciary, a process the government respects.

This renewed push follows public demonstrations, such as one organized by the Alliance of United Pati Community (AMPB), which urged lawmakers and the government to enact the bill and impose severe penalties on corrupt individuals. The alliance stressed their peaceful intentions and support for broader anti-corruption movements.
