“Indio Juan” Planned Attack on San Bernardo Mayor, Security Tightened

A wiretap allegedly revealed that Juan Flores Valenzuela, known as “Indio Juan,” planned to kill San Bernardo Mayor Christopher White on September 17, according to prosecutors. The information emerged after Valenzuela’s arrest following more than six months on the run.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office detected alleged coordination between Valenzuela and a criminal organization he reportedly led. Investigators intercepted the communication while he remained a fugitive, uncovering what authorities described as a plan to attack the mayor’s life.

The discovery led prosecutors to reinforce White’s personal security through Carabineros officers assigned to protect him. Municipal administrator Cristián Troncoso confirmed the decision and said officials learned of Valenzuela’s arrest through media reports during the night. “At night, we learned through the media that a person had been arrested who apparently was linked to the death threats the mayor has suffered,” Troncoso said.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office informed the mayor that it had decided to reinforce his personal security through the Carabineros officers assigned to this task.

White has faced threats before. In August 2025, authorities arrested a person suspected of intimidating the mayor and his family through a letter. At the time, White attributed the threat to his efforts against street vending. Further threats appeared on city streets after the municipality erased several murals associated with football fan groups at San Bernardo Municipal Stadium.

The latest warning has now placed the mayor under reinforced protection as prosecutors examine the alleged links between the fugitive, the criminal organization and the threats against him.
