Indonesia Adapts South Korea’s ‘Descendants of the Sun’: What to Know

Director Hanung Bramantyo has announced an Indonesian film adaptation of the South Korean hit series “Descendants of the Sun.” Speaking at IdeaFest 2026, he said the completed film would preserve the story’s romance between people from contrasting professions while giving it an identity and cultural relevance rooted in Indonesian society.

The process has taken quite a long time, and I am finally delighted to announce this international collaboration.

The film is expected to open in Indonesian cinemas in 2027. Reza Rahadian, Dian Sastrowardoyo and Eva Celia headline the cast. The project marks the first time Reza and Dian have appeared as the main romantic leads together in a feature film.

For Reza, the production also renews a long relationship with Hanung. Their earlier collaboration on “Perempuan Berkalung Sorban” earned Reza his first Citra Award in 2009. Reza said Hanung was like an older brother and that the project was more than a reunion, making it impossible for him to refuse.

Hanung is like a big brother to me. We have worked together for a long time. It is more than just a reunion, and I couldn't say no to him.

Dian said she was excited to share the screen with Reza in a new dynamic after both had built long careers in Indonesian film. Eva described feeling nervous about the role’s unusual demands, but said Hanung’s direction created a comfortable working environment.

Reza and I have had long careers in the film industry, but it turns out this is the first project where we are truly united as co-stars playing love interests. I am very excited.

The production brings together Indonesian companies Dapur Film, RFA, NEWKO Global Entertainment, Dwi Warna Sentosa, or Tobali Film, and Piring Langit, alongside South Korean firms Next Entertainment World, Barunson C&C and D BAY FILM FACTORY. Barunson E&A will handle international sales, while Contents Panda will manage distribution in South Korea.

I was very nervous at first, especially given the unique challenges I faced in this film, but Hanung created a comfortable space through his direction.
