Indonesia BNPP Strengthens Cross-Sector Synergy for Border Management

Indonesia's National Border Management Agency (BNPP) is enhancing cross-sector collaboration to manage national borders and develop border regions. A coordination forum held in Bandung on July 30, 2026, focused on aligning the implementation of action plans for border management and development for 2026.

The strategic meeting aimed to synchronize programs and policies across ministries, agencies, and local governments to accelerate integrated and sustainable development in border areas. The forum was opened by BNPP Secretary Makhruzi Rahman, who highlighted four key strategic issues for border management between 2025 and 2029: equitable development, resolving border disputes with neighboring countries, strengthening cross-border management, and improving institutional effectiveness and stakeholder coordination.

Makhruzi pointed out that development challenges in border areas persist due to limited connectivity infrastructure, transportation, telecommunications, and basic services in remote regions. Indonesia is still working to resolve border segments with Malaysia and Timor Leste, including addressing social impacts after settling outstanding boundary problems on Sebatik Island. The agency is also concerned about unofficial routes used for cross-border crime and the acceleration of developing new border posts.

"The complexity of challenges in border areas cannot be solved by one agency alone. It requires collaboration, commitment, and integrated planning and execution of programs between ministries, agencies, and regional governments," Makhruzi stated. He explained that the 2026 Action Plan is guided by BNPP Regulation No. 2 of 2026, which standardizes implementation and strengthens coordination functions. In 2026, 552 programs and activities will be undertaken by 29 ministries and agencies across 18 border provinces.
