Indonesia has called for calm and peaceful dialogue following a confrontation between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the South China Sea earlier this week. The incident underscores the persistent tensions in the region and Indonesia's role in advocating for diplomatic solutions.

Nabyl Achmad Mulachela, spokesperson for Indonesia's Foreign Ministry, stated that the confrontation highlights the crucial role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in managing regional affairs. Indonesia is actively promoting the peaceful resolution of the South China Sea dispute through dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Indonesia is urging ASEAN member states and its dialogue partners to prioritize diplomacy in resolving disputes, aligning with regional frameworks such as the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. "Indonesia continues to urge ASEAN member states and partners to implement the principles enshrined in these regional frameworks," Nabyl told reporters.

The clash occurred near the Second Thomas Shoal, an area within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone under UNCLOS. Philippine authorities accused the China Coast Guard of deliberately ramming a Philippine vessel, resulting in injuries. China, however, claimed the Philippine Navy vessel ignored warnings and collided with a Chinese patrol ship. The U.S. Department of State condemned China's actions, describing them as "dangerous and aggressive" and detrimental to regional peace and stability.
