Indonesia discovers vast gold and mineral reserves in Papua

President Prabowo Subianto announced Thursday that an Indonesian scientific expedition has discovered significant reserves of gold and minerals in the highlands of Papua. The expedition, a collaboration between the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), several universities, and supported by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), has been active for only two to three weeks.

Speaking in Karawang, West Java, Prabowo stated he received the report just hours before inaugurating the mandatory 50 percent biodiesel blend (B50) program. "The team from BRIN, along with several universities and assisted by the TNI, discovered a very large reserve of gold and minerals," Prabowo said. He emphasized that this newfound wealth is crucial for Indonesia's economic future, stating, "Now, we just need to continue to explore, to build upon what our predecessors have uncovered."

While the President did not disclose specific details about the exact location, estimated reserves, or the types of other minerals found, he asserted that the discovery ensures a bright economic trajectory for Indonesia. In addition to the Papua discoveries, Prabowo revealed that Indonesia has also found a large natural gas field in the Andaman block. This adds to the country's existing natural gas reserves in areas like Masela and Natuna, underscoring Indonesia's significant resource wealth.
