Indonesia Encourages Regional Innovation Through University Programs

Indonesia is pushing for universities to become hubs for regional innovation, leveraging community service programs to bridge the gap between academia and local governments. The Ministry of Home Affairs, through its Domestic Policy Strategy Agency (BSKDN), is actively promoting collaboration, specifically highlighting efforts with Cenderawasih University in Papua. This initiative aims to enhance the effectiveness of community service programs, such as the planned 2026 program in the Yapen Islands Regency.

BSKDN Head Yusharto Huntoyungo explained that the ministry's mandate includes fostering regional innovation, as outlined in Indonesia's regional governance law. He stressed that successful regional innovations must possess novelty, provide tangible benefits to both the community and local government, avoid imposing burdens on citizens, fall within the purview of local authorities, and have the potential for replication.

This activity is our effort to optimize the cooperation between BSKDN Kemendagri and Cenderawasih University. Hopefully, it will also have an impact on the cooperation that has been established between the Yapen Islands Regency Government and Cenderawasih University, especially in the implementation of the KKN in 2026.

The ministry's guidance during the community service program's briefing underscored these criteria. The goal is to ensure that innovations developed through these programs genuinely contribute to improving governance, public services, and the overall competitiveness of the regions, making them impactful and sustainable.

During the briefing for KKN students, we have conveyed that regional innovation must have an element of novelty, provide benefits to the community and local government, not result in burdens or restrictions on the community, be within the authority of the local government, and have the potential for replication.
