Indonesia Ferry Fire Claims Five Lives, 234 Evacuated

A fire aboard the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II ferry in Indonesia led to the evacuation of 234 passengers, with five confirmed deaths. Survivors and victims were disembarked at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya and Kalianget Port in Sumenep early Monday morning.

Nanang Sigit PH, Head of the Surabaya Search and Rescue Office, reported that 113 victims arrived at Tanjung Perak Port, while nine reached Kalianget Port. Survivors underwent medical examinations, with those needing further treatment being referred to hospitals. At Kalianget Port, four victims were sent to Garam Hospital in Sumenep, and five others were flown to Surabaya after initial data collection.

The joint SAR team confirmed the evacuation of 229 survivors and five fatalities. Three additional vessels were en route to Surabaya carrying more victims. The cause of the blaze remains unclear, with previous reports mentioning some 41 missing after a similar ferry fire near Madura Island.
