Indonesia gives Rp15 million in start-up capital to 1,000 self-employed workers

Indonesia’s Manpower Ministry is injecting Rp15 million into each of 1,000 established self-employed workers as the government seeks to expand employment through entrepreneurship.

The recipients work in goods and services, food industries, agriculture, livestock, fisheries and maritime activities. They are receiving preparatory training at the Lembang Center for Expanding Employment Opportunities in West Bandung, West Java.

For established self-employed workers, each receives Rp15 million in business capital, followed by three months of mentoring. New self-employed workers receive Rp5 million. We also provide training and mentoring.

Manpower Minister Yassierli said each established self-employed worker would receive Rp15 million in business capital followed by three months of mentoring. New self-employed workers receive Rp5 million, along with training and mentoring.

This is one of our efforts to expand employment opportunities. In the process, there are already many success stories we have supported. Some have succeeded in employing 70 people, and many others have as well.

Yassierli described the program as part of the government’s continuing effort to expand self-generated employment. He said some participants supported through the scheme had grown their businesses to employ as many as 70 people. The ministry also connects graduates with banks to obtain additional financing.

The initiative forms part of efforts to reduce unemployment. Statistics Indonesia data cited by the minister puts the open unemployment rate at 4.65%, equivalent to 7.2 million people. He said the government is pursuing job creation in both the formal sector and entrepreneurship-based informal work.
