Indonesia May Postpone Marketplace Tax Again, Minister Says

Indonesia's Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has opened the possibility of further delaying the implementation of a 2.5% income tax on marketplace transactions. The tax, initially scheduled to take effect on August 1, 2026, was previously postponed by the government to October 31, 2026. "My priority is, I'll postpone it first. We'll see what the situation is like, the economic and public conditions. If it could be postponed yesterday, if the situation is bad, we can postpone it again. But, for now (it's postponed) until October," Purbaya stated. He explained that the postponement aims to give the public more time to increase their income capacity, thereby providing adequate capital for spending. Purbaya noted that national economic growth is currently stable at 5.29% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, with a target to reach 6% by the end of the year. The Directorate General of Taxes had previously stated that any PPh Pasal 22 tax collected by marketplaces from domestic traders would be returned. The regulation serving as the legal basis for the marketplace tax is postponed until October 31, 2026, with the tax collection now slated to begin on November 1, 2026. Consequently, existing directives appointing marketplaces as tax collectors will be canceled and reissued.
